The month of May is an excellent time for travel. In many places, spring has begun and the weather is mild, but it’s early enough in the year for travelers to avoid some of the crowds that come along with the summer vacation season. If you’re looking for something to celebrate, the month of May offers a number of festivals and celebrations in many parts of the world. You’re probably already familiar with well-known festivals like May Day and Cinco de Mayo, but those are just the tip of the iceberg. Read about a few of the interesting and exciting festivals happening around the world in the month of May.

  • Festa Del Grillo 2013. Come to the city of Florence, Italy on May 9, otherwise known as Ascension Day. This is the day of the Festa Del Grillo celebration that signifies the beginning of spring. Festa Del Grillo, or the Cricket Festival, takes place on the river Arno in Cascine Park. Listen to live musical performances throughout the day, and buy a souvenir cricket to hang in your window for good luck.

  • Frieze Art Fair. Travel to New York from May 10 to May 13 for the Frieze Art Fair. This is a terrific opportunity to enjoy contemporary art from around the world. You’ll also be able to enjoy speakers, readings, debates and discussions, and even music during the course of the four day event. Tickets are sold in advance and can be purchased online; a one-day ticket is $42

  • RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Everyone knows that May is the perfect time for flowers, and that is probably why the UK’s most prestigious flower show takes place from May 21 to May 25. Visit London to enjoy the show gardens, urban gardens and artisans at the Chelsea Flower Show sponsored by the Royal Horticultural Society.

  • Noisily Festival. If a visit to England sounds wonderful, but flower shows aren’t your thing, you may be interested in the Noisily Festival taking place in Leicester. True to its name, the Noisily Festival bills itself as a “massive, awe inspiring party”. This interactive celebration showcasing electronic music and art will take place from May 24 to May 27. Tickets are available on the Noisily Festival website.

  • How the Light Gets in 2013. For a very unique kind of festival, travel to Hay-on-Wye in Powys, Wales for How the Light Gets in, a philosophy and music festival that will begin on May 23 and run until June 2. If you’ve never heard of Hay-on-Wye, it may help to know that the town is also known as the “town of books”, and it’s famous for attracting intellectuals from around the world. At the How the Light Gets in festival, you can enjoy everything from debates and live philosophy sessions to poetry readings to musical performances from artists like Nick Mulvey, the Electric Swing Circus, and the Utah Saints.

This is only a small sampling of the May festivals around the world. There is also a fireworks show in Germany, a ballet celebration in Russia, and a street food fair in Singapore, just to name a few more. Wherever you plan to go in May, you’ll be able to find something nearby to celebrate.
